What is “Positive Contraction” ?
- A play on words to make fun of “negative growth”, a term often used by leaders when sales stopped growing and they don’t want to admit that the company or economy is shrinking and contracting
- A conviction that in a world of finite natural resources nothing can grow indefinitely, and therefore “sustainable growth” is an oxymoron
- An expectation that contraction can actually be positive: if humanity finds ways to transition from unsustainable material growth to shrinking our over-consumption of resources and its associated pollution so that we can lead richer lives, without wasteful consumption and in tune with the natural ecosystems on which we depend
